Fitness for School-aged Children and Youth
This session presents four different ways schools are implementing policies and programs designed to improve the fitness of children and youth. Results of a summer program (VERB) designed to encourage and enable physical activity will be discussed. Use of a health "report card" sent home from schools and its impact on student and parent behaviors to reduce obesity and physical activity will be discussed. Two specific school programs that were implemented to increase physical fitness, the Exemplary Physical Education Curriculum and In Motion will be presented.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Understand and be able to apply the process of implementing a health report card and school health follow-up in one community. 2.Describe the effects of participating in summer program designed to address youth obesity. 3. Describe the implications of a community-wide program designed to increase physical activity in children and youth. 4.Describe the results of participating in an Exemplary Physical Education Curriculum.
