Childhood obesity is recognized as a critical and urgent problem that warrants effective programs in schools, homes and communities. The Nutrition Friendly Schools and Community program is an environmental model that includes 15 criteria to be achieved by schools for obesity prevention. In addition, it is thought that school policies must be implemented for sustainable change. This is accomplished most effectively with linkages to community-based resources. Working with parents to prevent childhood obesity is of course essential and lessons learned from a Head Start program will identify some barriers parents face in providing their children with proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. Finally, barriers and components of effective implementation of an aquatic program designed for childhood obesity prevention and intervention will be included in this session.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Describe how a policy-driven approach to obesity prevention in schools can result in sustainable change. 2. Describe the Nutrition Friendly Schools and Communities (NFSC)certification tool and identify how it can be used to model other programs for positive results. 3. Identify barriers that parents face in providing their preschoolers and children with a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. 4. Identify the barriers and also components of an aquatic program for obesity prevention and intervention in urban schools.
