Persistent disparities and emergence of new health threats calls for new approaches to improving community health. Community-based participatory research (CBPR), a collaborative research process between researchers and community representatives recently has been shown to help improve the effectiveness of behavioral, communication, and health interventions. Community interventions to reduce disparities in such conditions as stroke, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS through the engagement of churches, grassroots community groups, and HBCUS indicate strong support for an expansion of CBPR. However, the key to conducting and evaluating such sustained, organized efforts is still relatively unknown and warrants further discussion and development. This session will address guidelines on how best to conduct participatory research and will examine a broad range of efforts that attempt to carry out CBPR strategies.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to: 1. Identify collaborative strategies for addressing health disparities. 2. Discuss effective approaches to establishing collaborative health promotion strategies with religious organizations. 3. Identify health conditions that can benefit from the use of CBPR approaches.
