This session will address innovative health education and health care interventions designed to overcome social, cultural and institutional barriers that limit access by refugee and immigrant populations. Speakers will discuss providing linguistically and culturally appropriate health care, addressing health concerns of newly-arrived Somali Bantu refugees, using a social justice and human rights-based model for health care delivery, employing web-based information networks to expand access to health care information, preventing violence among immigrant Latino youth and employing violence prevention curriculum to address dating violence. | |||
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) will be able to: 1. Articulate criteria for evaluating health care programs for refugee and immigrant populations; 2. Identify key elements of innovative programs, including technology, for delivering health care to refugees and immigrants; 3. Describe strategies to integrate bilingual and bicultural outreach for community health services; 4. Discuss the advantages of using a human rights model for delivering health care to refugees and immigrants. | |||
