National instability catches the international focus at the present time, particularly with conflict and natural disasters. Instability provides special challenges to health and requires a very different approach to meeting population needs. Too often immediate responses to disasters (which has to be rapid and externally driven and financed), is not supported by effective efforts to develop the health systems which will need to maintain health after the immediate crisis is over. In this session we look at a range of issues from delivering services in post-conflict Afghanistan, to the ongoing conflict in Mindanao in the Philippines. We then go on to look at how we can more accurately document the impact of instability and conflict on health with a hope that we can develop more effective responses in the long-term. | |||
