Community Action to Fight Asthma is a network of asthma coalitions in California working to shape local, regional and state policies to reduce the environmental triggers of asthma for school-aged children where they live, learn, and play. Since its formation in 2002, CAFA coalitions – consisting of community-based organizations, health care providers, school district representatives, lung health advocates, environmental health and justice leaders, and others – have utilized community organizing, media techniques, and direct advocacy to transform community concerns into specific policy victories with institutionalized, long-term benefits for school aged children specifically and the public in general. The work of the twelve asthma coalitions is supported with coalition development, policy, evaluation, and media technical assistance from regional and state-level partners. The Network is funded by the California Endowment. During the session, CAFA representatives will provide an in-depth review of the Network’s model for coalition-driven policy change. Participants will learn: 1) The Network’s mission, organizational structure, and operating methodologies, including strategic planning and implementation; 2) Concrete and diverse examples of the Network’s accomplishments related to homes, schools and outdoor air quality; and 3) Lessons learned from the Network’s experience, including the benefits of coalition-based policy change at the local and state levels, challenges inherent in such work, and strategies for overcoming them. CAFA representatives present will include local asthma coalition leaders, evaluation team members, and state coordinating partners. In all presentations, emphasis will be given to those attributes and lessons learned that can be replicated by other advocates, regardless of available funding. | |||
