Community Health Center Movement: 40 Years Promoting Social Justice and Health Equity for the Underserved
This invited session will provide a history of the community health center movement focusing on the values of its founders in terms of social justice and health equity. It will give voices to the movement; address the development and role of community health centers in public health practice; identify innovative community health initiatives led by Boston community health centers; and outline the role and response of community health centers in the call to eliminate racial ethnic disparities in health.
Learning Objectives: 1.Increase understanding of the roots and values of the community health center movement in the struggle for social justice and health equity for underserved populations. 2. Discussion of health center innovations to respond to four decades of dynamic health system change to ensure continued accessible, quality care for underserved populations. 3. Gain understanding of health care as a basic human right and increase advocacy for universal health coverage and access for all Americans. 4. Identify opportunities to engage community health centers as partners with public health in the quest to eliminate racial ethnic disparities in health.
