This session evaluates and discusses the built environment from a community and neighborhood perspective. The model of one community's public health department to improve the built environment will be presented with the goal in mind of providing healthier and more livable communities. The importance of health impacts assessments (HIAs) will be discussed to elaborate on the process in which policies and commuity programs can affect health outcomes in populations. Two important aspects of the built environment, land use and development, will be discussed in terms of how much of an impact health departments have in land development planning. Survey results will be presented that will examine the correlation between health outcomes and a designed to identify the importance access to physical activity and nutrition outlets sucha s fresh fruits and vegetables. | |||
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the participants will be able to: 1)Identify steps taken by various communities in creating more healthy and livable neighborhoods; 2)Discuss health impacts assessemnts (HIAs) and determine the feasibility for utilizing HIAs in their communities; 3)Evaluate land use and development policies that may be used in improving public health; 4)Assess built environment aspects that address nutrition and physical activity and evaluate the connection between the built environment and health outcomes. | |||
