Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview:
The purpose of this Institute is to present a half-day workshop on developing advocacy skills as a tobacco control strategy and evaluating the success of community advocacy programs. The presenter teaches advocacy skills to MPH students at The George Washington University and recently completed a four year evaluation of a National Education Association Health Information youth advocacy program to promote a tobacco free society. She developed reliable insruments for evaluating youth advocacy and will discuss appropriate outcome measures for advocacy programs. Participants will review advocacy models for youth and adults and discuss how to use these models in their communities. Health promoters who work with youth and/or adults will learn a model for creating and evaluating programs that promote a tobacco free society.
