Statement of Purpose and Institute Overview: | |||
Through the use of lectures, group problem-solving exercises, and group discussion, this course will enable public health practitioners and lawyers to gain greater understanding of the legal foundations of the American public health system, the practical application of legal powers to public health problems, and the local, state and federal facets of public health law. Working topics to be discussed are: • Sources of public health law • Scope of public health powers • Administrative law for public health practitioners • Overview of public health powers and limits as they relate to: Surveillance, outbreak investigations, emergencies, infectious disease control • Role of legal counsel for public health agencies • Vaccine law and policy; • Relationship between public health agencies and legislatures; • Law and emergency preparedness and emergency response. | |||
