Evolution of a Multi-year Project to Improve Access to Care for Residents of Colonias Along the U.S./Mexico border: IHOS Phase 2
Jointly funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and HRSA, the Integrated Health Outreach System project began an effort to increasing access to care for colonia residents through the use of promotoras and a community health development strategy. By training and supporting promotoras in outreach, advocacy and health education, and engaging them with service providers, colonia residents and local resource holders (e.g., elected officials), significant improvements in access to care have been achieved. The project was extended an additional 3 years beyond the 4 years of initial funding to further test and evaluate this approach. This panel will provide: (1) a brief overview of the project, (2) a description of the evaluation design and its different components, (3) preliminary data from several of the evaluation components, and challenges/solutions for that component, and (4) a discussion of the broader policy and community planning implications drawn from this and collateral projects. The moderator will facilitate a discussion among the panelists and include the audience through an on-going question and answer process.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the session, participants will be able to: (1) describe the key elements of the Integrated Health Outreach System project; (2) describe the key characteristics of colonias, colonia residents, promotoras as they relate to implementing a community health development strategy; (3) identify at least 3 challenges to conducting an evaluation of the IHOS project.
