Policing and Incarceration in the United States
In 1980 there were half a million people in jails and prisons in the US. In 2005 that number was 2.5 million. This session will explore one of the major health and human rights issues facing Black, Latino, and Native American communities in the US. US incarceration rates compared to other industrialized countries and incarceration rated for US communities of color will be presented and discussed. Other related topics will include; 1) reentry 2) innocence declared after incarceration 3) public health and medical care in jails and prisons and 4) economic incentives driving high incarceration rates will be addressed. Finally the implications for communities of color and strategies for addressing this apparent infringement on human rights in the US.
