Katrina: Through the Lens of Public Health and Human Rights
Hurricane Katrina exposed a wide array of vulnerabilities- from the endangered coastal wetlands to the fragile health infrastructure in the most affected areas. While many lessons have been learned, profoundly lacking is a systematic, in-depth evaluation of the impact on the affected populations from a holistic perspective. Of special note are the health and human rights of those that are most vulnerable: the young, the elderly and the disadvantaged. This session will focus on three under-recognized aspects of disaster preparedness and response: the psycho-social implications, (public) health system assurance, and environmental policies. For each of the three topics, presenters will examine key findings and articulate strategic actions to address the currently existing gaps.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session the participant will be able to: Describe the role of mental health, health system assurance and environmental policies in disaster preparedness and response. Examine the impact of Hurricane Katrina on the most vulnerable populations from a public health and human rights perspective. Apply the strategic action steps in disaster planning.
