Right to Health: Pathway to Justice and Change
The right to health is stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) as “the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health.” This means not only the right to medical care, but the right to all of the social determinants which contribute to high standards of health: food, water, sanitation, preventive care, housing and tools for growth and change and communal development. In the last few years a new movement has developed among NGOs, international organizations, governments and members of civil society. The right to health effort grows out of principles enunciated in the UDHR. The United Nations has appointed a Special Rapporteur to investigate and report on the status of the right to health worldwide. NGOs and agencies have placed the right to health as a building block of their daily work. Grassroots movements incorporate the right to health as a basic principle. Increasingly organizations are using the right to health as an essential element that informs their daily programmatic activities. Under the UN treaties in force in the US it is the obligation of all bodies in the public sector to weave the right to health into mission statements, administrative codes and program purposes and goals. The right to health is a powerful and practical tool for the public’s health. The cooperation and contribution of many actors both governmental and non-governmental is vital for progress in fulfilling the right to health.
Learning Objectives: 1. Attendees will be able to define the right to health and its importance in public health practice. 2. Attendees will be exposed to how agencies and NGOs use the right to health as practical core organizing principles.
