The Multi-State Learning Collaborative for Performance and Capacity Assessment or Accreditation of Public Health Departments (MLC) is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and managed by the National Network of Public Health Institutes and the Public Health Leadership Society. During its first year, the MLC convened five states that are implementing innovative performance assessment or accreditation programs for public health departments. Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina and Washington were selected from a field of 18 applicants to participate in the MLC. The five states received a $150,000 grant from RWJF to enhance their existing accreditation-like efforts. With these funds, the states conducted a wide range of activities to augment their programs including the development of the following products: accreditation readiness instrument, digital library of model practices, refined measures, quality improvement plans, and a social marketing campaign for accreditation. This session will explore the following: 1.) products that resulted from the program enhancements made by the five states during their 12 month grant period; 2.) common themes addressed by the participating states; 3.) ways in which participating in the MLC process enhanced the programs in the five states; 4.) lessons learned from the enhancements that can be applied in other states and to a national accreditation program.
Learning Objectives: 1. identify innovative tools and techniques that support systematic assessment and accreditation programs; 2. identify the roles of key partners and stakeholders involved in enhancing and maintaining successful assessment and accreditation programs; and 3. identify how lessons learned that can be applied to assessment programs in other states and at the national level.
