The committee's study was sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The National Research Council is the principal operating arm of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering. It is a private, nonprofit institution that provides science and technology advice under a congressional charter. The goal of this session is to provide an overview of the findings as related to the health effects of fluoride on teeth and bones, the adequacy of the data to determine how much lower the maximum contaminant level goal should be set to protect the public’s health from bone fractures, and the recommendations for the future direction for research. | |||
Learning Objectives: 1. Discuss the NRC report, rationale, findings and implications for revision of EPA standards on the current maximum containment level and secondary maximum containment level for fluoride in fluoride in drinking water with particular emphasis teeth and bone effects. 2. Discuss the adequacy of the potential of fluoride to cause osteosarcoma. 3. Discuss the adequacy of the data to determine how much lower the maximum contaminant level goal should be set to protect the public’s health from bone fractures. 4. Discuss the research priorities. | |||
