Health Education Responds to Minority Health Issues
Minority health issues are an important part of health education’s work to eliminate disparities and work for social justice for all. In this session, presenters will describe their work in minority. Presenters in this session will describe the importance of engaging members of the community in their places of worship and leisure (e.g., barbershops). Other presenters describe their work in gaining understanding of the cultural factors that may exist in such behaviors as cancer screenings or leisure time activity.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Identify limitations of existing research on adolescent religiosity and sexual behavior; 2. Discuss cultural factors that serve as barriers to mammography and prostate cancer screening. 3. Describe disparities in leisure time physical activity among Latinos, Non-Hispanic whites and Non-Hispanic Blacks.
