A large number of U.S. citizens do not have the capacity to effectively make health decisions because of their inability to understand health information. This presentation uses the example of how poor health literacy skills and unnecessarily constructed communication barriers create a difficult situation for many elderly in understanding the Medicare D materials. Additionally, the presenter will discuss how communication barriers raise issues of social justice. | |||
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Describe literacy skills of US adults based on findings from national studies of health literacy. 2. Identify literacy-related barriers in the Medicare Part D documents and applications 3. Describe the link between literacy and human rights. | |||
