| Environmental and human impacts of military contamination have been documented by scientists, government environmental specialists and non-governmental organizations for several years. Participants will learn about three former or current military sites and contamination associated with these sites that have adversely impacted the health of community memebers as well as their neighborhood environments. In City of San Antonio in Texas, Vieques Island of Puerto Rico and St. Lawrence Island in Alaska, communities have organized themselves and collaborated with University scientists and other experts to create solutions to health and environmental problems associated with exposure to military contamination. | |||
| Learning Objectives: 1. Define the sources contamination of three military sites and the current and historical pathways of exposure. 2. Describe the results of collaborative community- university partnerships in three communities to analyze the health conditions. 3. Understand the types of community outreach techniques used to educate the importance of health studies, develop an effective study for the area, recruit participation and inform the community of the outcomes. | |||
