Session: Cost-Benefit Analyses of Environmental Policies and Diseases
4305.0: Tuesday, November 07, 2006: 4:30 PM-6:00 PM
Oral
Cost-Benefit Analyses of Environmental Policies and Diseases
This session will examine numerous perspectives that address costs associated with environmental exposures. The preventable nature of most diseases such as cancer and asthma in children will be discussed. The intense debate facing the US on prenatal exposure to methylmercury will be addressed through a cost-benefit analysis of current facility controls and EPA policies. The environmental origin of many childhood diseases will be highlighted and the health care costs that result will be explored. The 3 main types of studies that estimate health and related costs of environmental pollution will be presented.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: Discuss the different methods used to estimate the health and related costs of environmental pollution; Articulate why mercury emissions from coal-burning power plants may impact neurological development; Discuss the environmentally attributable costs of diseases and disorders in New York State; Identify the principal methodological challenges in estimating costs of illness.
