Public health issues that arise from contaminated air and water are global problems that are not strictly characteristic of the U.S. In this session, resources such as clean air and water will be examined as human rights as opposed to options. Ecological public works programs and their impact on an international scale will be presented. The exposure risk of sub-populations of the U.S. to various environmental conaminants will be examined. Results of a smoking ban study in Italy will be discussed, and it's impacts on indoor air quality in public places will be presented. The hurdles faced by the population of the Negev Desert to gain access to potable water will be discussed. The results of an air quality monitor study along the US/Mexico broder will be presented, and the results will be discussed and related to school absenteeism. | |||
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to: Recognize the connection between environmental justice and public health reagrding respective populations; describe the process used to assess the effect of PM levels on school absenteeism; Define the impact that a smoking ban has on indor air quality in public places; Assess the risk of exposure to DDE, lead and PCBs for sub-populations of the U.S.; Describe the elements of sustainable sanitation in a low-income community in Mexico. | |||
