Update on Health Services Research: HSR Competencies
Professionals in the field of health services research (HSR) are crucial to the development, dissemination and evaluation of public health initiatives. Unlike the master's degree field of public health, which has well-defined competencies for a wide range of personnel, little attention has been paid to the competencies, skills, and the professional identities of doctoral trained health services researchers. Many HSR doctoral students have a population health perspective, want to work in public health entities or would like to translate research into public health settings. In September 2005, co-moderators from the Johns Hopkins University and the University of Washington hosted a consensus conference, sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, to encourage a dialogue about the competencies common to all health services researchers. The conference attendees, from academic, government, and non-profit sector organizations, arrived at a set of 14 core competencies for health services research doctoral students. This panel will present the development of the competencies and the results of the consensus process and will offer multiple perspectives (academia, industry, public health, community: domestic and international) on the core competencies and their application to public health. The session is intended to foster discussion among attendees on the scope of the competencies, how to integrate them into doctoral training, and ideas for next steps for further discussion on health services research education.
Learning Objectives: To understand the competencies necessary for health services researchers and especially how these apply to public health. To explore ways that these competencies could be delivered to doctoral students.
