New initatives to provide health care coverage and access are being approved at the state and local levels. These initiatives may help break the impasse on covering the 45 million uninsured in the U.S., but important challenges lie ahead. This session explores challenges and promises for new programs at the state level in Massachusetts, and in the City and County of San Francisco, and their implications for a population-based approach to improving the public's health. Presenters will explore the elements of these programs, populations covered, affordability for individuals and other payers, cost controls, range of services, and governance. The discussant will consider prospects for improving equity and quality of care. | |||
