Humans depend on natural ecosystems and the services they provide, including food, energy, and clean air and water. Yet our actions in the past 50 years have changed these systems to an unprecedented degree, altering habitats and reducing biodiversity. This decline is expected to accelerate under most climate-change scenarios. At the same time, new infectious diseases are emerging at a faster rate than ever before, and many of these pathogens are zoonotic in origin. A common, defining feature of emerging infectious diseases is that they are triggered by anthropogenic changes to the environment. But what are the underlying mechanisms of this emergence? Although it is recognized that biodiversity affects human health, a direct connection between biodiversity loss and increased health risks remains largely untested. The National Center for Environmental Research at the U.S. EPA’s Office of Research and Development has proposed a joint Eco-Health research program to study the link between changes in biodiversity and risks to human health. This presentation will discuss the state of the science, determine research priorities, and begin to talk about how to integrate existing data into the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS), a monitoring and risk-forecasting network.
Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to: 1. Recognize the value of natural ecosystems and their relationship to human health 2. Better understand the relationship between climate change and biodiversity loss and the spread and emergence of infectious diseases
