Contemporary cancer treatment approaches encompass a vast variety of medial and advances. This session presents four views on promising alternative and complementary health practices (ACHP) for cancer. The first paper presents a view of ACHP use from the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS). The second study evaluates the feasibility of integrating a qigong compared to a modified exercise program into a cancer treatment regimen. The third paper explores the efficacy of acupuncture in treating cancer symptoms. The fourth paper describes how, “through complementary clinical services, education, and research, cancer patients can re-gain control and be empowered to actively participate in their care plans.”
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: (1) Understand the advantages of using representative population-based data to study this issue, describe the relative frequency with which California adults use a wide array of CAM modalities to treat and respond to a diagnosis of cancer; (2) Understand the public health responsibility for providing safe and efficacious integrative therapy services and describe the challenges and opportunities for implementing a qigong program into an urban healthcare setting; (3) Describe methods for assessing acupuncture's effectiveness for treating symptoms of cancer, and; (4) Explain why CAM is an appropriate intervention for cancer related symptoms and describe a program that has successfully integrated CAM.
