Oral
Somatic and Body Oriented Alternative and Complementary Health Research
There are a variety of somatic and body-oriented illness symptoms that have been successfully treated non-surgically and without pharmaceuticals. This session explores the use of alternative and complementary health practices to redress somatic symptoms of disease. The first study provides an overview of using Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to diagnose and treat various bodily conditions. The second study identifies the health benefits of sustained ashtanga and hatha yoga practice as a complementary health practice. The third study describes the most common CAM techniques used to treat osteoarthritis of the knee. The fourth study describes the “feasibility and acceptability of body-oriented psychotherapy for female veterans…with PTSD.”
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: (1) Describe the diagnostic and treatment criteria used to identify a common TCM body-oriented condition; (2) Describe the change in social health attributed by yoga practice; (3) Articulate the importance of discussing CAM use with osteoarthritis patients, and; (4) Articulate the acceptability of the body-oriented therapy intervention to female veterans with PTSD and chronic pain and identify the barriers to feasibility of a larger efficacy trial of body-oriented therapy to female veterans at a VA.
