Prevention of Childhood Obesity: The Role of the Food Industry and Local Governments in Creating Healthy Environments
Over 12 million children in the United States have a BMI for age over the 95th percentile. The cause of overweight/obesity is an imbalance of calories in and calories out. However, the contributing factors for this imbalance are complex and include many modifiable factors. Increasingly, communities are recognizing the environmental barriers to healthy behaviors and addressing these issues via local laws and policies. An environmental and policy approach therefore requires a collaborative effort that must engage multiple disciplines that include not only nutritionists and physical activity experts but also urban planners, transportation designers, local policy makers, and the food and beverage industry. The proposed session will explore the role of policies in these arenas for reducing the rates of overweight and obesity. The overall objective of the session is to identify multiple ways in which policy can be effectively used to prevent obesity by supporting healthy eating and active living.
Learning Objectives: The session will include 3 invited speakers whose talks have the distinct objectives of: a) identifying how material deprivation and environmental inequity contribute to inactivity among children; b) describing how local municipalities can use zoning, land use planning and other environmental approaches to improve the health of their communities; c) working with away from home food establishments to develop menus that favor lower calories, less calorie density, and smaller portion sizes.
