Comprehensive health improvement strategies are incorporating herbal and dietary practices on an increasing basis. This session presents four perspectives on nutrient-enhanced approaches to treatment. The first paper provides a meta-analytic view of Ayurvedic herbal therapies for asthma. The second study examines how patients communicate about their use of dietary supplements, often underreporting use to physicians. The third study describes the presence of heavy metals in Ayurvedic herbal medical products and discusses public health policy implications. The fourth study explores the effects of Intravenous Micronutrient Therapy on chronic disease.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: (1) Recognize Ayurvedic herbals and other herbals for which effectiveness or efficacy has been shown; recognize which of these herbals have a positive safety profile in the current literature; (2) Recognize the importance of communicating the patient's use of dietary supplements to the treating physician and identify 5 dietary supplements commonly used by patients with cancer; (3) Define the prevalence of lead, mercury, and arsenic in an internationally representative sample of Ayurvedic remedies and discuss the implications of research for dietary supplement regulatory policy; (4) Articulate the procedure for intravenous micronutrient therapy, also known as the Myers’ cocktail, and discuss implications and the impact of semi-invasive therapies in chronic disease treatment.
