Purpose: Faith organizations provide a promising venue for research and dissemination of dietary and physical activity interventions to promote health and prevent cancer and other chronic diseases. This session will discuss the design, evaluation, and dissemination of three faith-based and faith-placed diet and physical activity interventions implemented in various regions and ethnic groups including African American, white, and Latino populations. Methods: The session will describe the continuum from design and qualitative/formative research, to effectiveness evaluation, and finally to national dissemination. Common methods and frameworks, such as RE-AIM and community-based participatory approaches, have been applied in various projects. Rigorous evaluation has been conducted at each stage of the process including qualitative analysis, randomized study designs, and careful process evaluation. Results: Results of each study will be presented, in terms of reach, efficacy/effectiveness, key variable and concepts that are associated with behavior change, and factors related to program adoption, implementation, and maintenance. Of the studies that have been evaluated, significant improvements have been demonstrated in fruit and vegetable consumption, physical activity, and weight loss. In addition, positive changes in psychosocial variables including social support, self-efficacy/self-regulation, and intrinsic motivation have been achieved. For Body & Soul, a framework and evaluation process for national dissemination is currently underway by the National Cancer Institute. Discussion: Presenters will discuss cross-cutting themes, issues, and dilemmas for faith-based nutrition and physical activity research across the discovery to dissemination continuum. Implications for next steps in research and practice will be discussed and emerging challenges approaches will be identified.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session participants will be able to describe the major issues with the dissemination of successful models of faith-based nutrition and activity programming in the US.
