How Inequality is Making Us Sick is a forthcoming series for PBS by California Newsreel that will explore the root causes of our alarming socio-economic and racial/ethnic disparities in health. The four-hour series will demonstrate that there is more to our health than bad habits, health care or unlucky genes and examine how the social circumstances in which we are born, live and work profoundly affect our well-being and longevity. This session will provide the opportunity to preview work-in-progress clips and give feedback to the producers. Attendees will also be invited to join an ambitious public engagement campaign accompanying the series. The campaign will confront American myths and misconceptions about health, engage policy makers, and reframe the national debate about what we as a society can and should do to reduce health disparities.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session participants will have: previewed and discussed the series as a vehicle to promote health equity; debated how the series can be used to move the health discussion "upstream" by injecting social and economic policy into discussions of health and introducing health consequences into debates over social and economic policies; and have a range of options to participate in the accompanying public engagement campaign.
