Don’t Agonize. Organize: A Discussion of State Affiliate Structures and Policies
Just as laws vary from state to state, APHA state affiliates differ. One size definitely does not fit all. Comparing the variety of affiliate structures can help affiliates to decide whether or not they might be missing something, or better yet, whether or not your affiliate could help another affiliate to be more efficient or effective. In this interactive session, representatives from four different affiliates will highlight some of their affiliate’s strengths and/or weaknesses regarding organizational structure and policies. For example, what options do different affiliates have for student or organizational memberships? What policies are in place to address different dues structures? Is it best to organize affiliates around topics such as environment health or job status (e.g., health directors or food safety professionals) and/or are there hybrid or cross cutting methods of organizing that are more efficient or effective? The session facilitator will engage the panel and the audience in a discussion of various structural and policy options.
Learning Objectives: 1. Participants will be able evaluate the pros and cons of different types of affiliate policies. 2. Participants will be able to critically compare structural options among various state affiliates.
