Town Hall Meeting on NBPHE/Credentialing
The National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE, the Board) has been created, following many years of intense discussion about credentialing within the public health community. The Board is scheduled in 2008 to begin credentialing graduates of programs and schools of public health accredited by the Council on Education of Public Health (CEPH). The Board views credentialing as one pathway to improve the quality of education students receive, to improve graduates overall effectiveness in the practice of public health, and to heighten recognition of graduate-trained public health professionals who have attained the credential. The process under way includes developing, preparing, administering and evaluating a voluntary certification examination that tests whether students and graduates of CEPH-accredited schools and programs have mastered the core knowledge and skills relevant to contemporary public health. This new credentialing process is occurring at a time of heightened interest, when new knowledge, skills, and competencies are required to practice public health, the diversity of our nation is increasing, and rapid turnover in the public health work force is anticipated. As with any new program, there will be a number of questions about the Board and the credentialing process. To this end, presenters will describe: 1) the purpose of the credential; 2) the structure and composition of the Board; 3) the content covered in and eligibility to sit for the exam, and 4) considerations, both pro and con, for potential examinees. Session participants also will have an opportunity to make suggestions and recommendations about ways to strengthen this new process.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Describe the purpose of a credential for public health graduates. 2. Articulate the credentialing exam’s content areas and eligibility criteria and related details. 3. Discuss issues regarding the exam and credentialing in public health more broadly.
