2007 IH Section Call for Abstracts

DEADLINE - February 16, 2007 11:59 PM PST

The International Health Section welcomes abstracts related to the overall meeting theme of "Politics, Policy, and Public Health".

General Instructions
Abstracts must:
1) State the purpose of the work to be presented
2) Explain the data or information used
3) Describe the methods used
4) Present major results
5) State recommendations or policy implications

Abstracts will only be accepted within the topic areas listed with this call for Abstracts. Note that all submissions should relate to: (1) health problems and issues of countries outside the United States or (2) how health problems and issues outside the United States affect the US (including lessons for the US from outside and the problems faced by immigrant populations).

APHA is a premier forum for scientific presentation and discussion, and the International Health Section maintains very high standards for quality and content. Writers are strongly encouraged to read the specific instructions for submission on the APHA site and to follow the format and process carefully. Abstracts that do not follow the exact format of the submission process will not be rejected, but will be marked down.

All abstracts should relate to the conference theme of “Politics, Policy, and Public Health”. Submissions that do not relate to this topic will receive lower marks in the assessment process.

If accepted for presentation, the author (or designate) will be expected to register and attend the conference in Washington, DC in November, 2007. There is no financial aid or assistance available for this. Individuals who may have difficulty attending the APHA annual meeting should identify a co-author that will be able to attend and participate in the program.

Process for review
Individual Presentations
All submitted abstracts will be peer reviewed for consideration of inclusion in the program. Indicate your preferences for presentation format on your abstract form. You may submit your abstract with the designation “oral only”, “poster only”, or “no preference”.

Organized panels
Those interested in organizing four-speaker panels around a specific topic must submit an abstract (and the author information that accompanies it) for EACH presentation and note the number assigned to the abstracts. Then the session organizer should send an e-mail to the IH Section Planner (mbryant@msh.org) with the numbers of the four abstracts to consider as an organized panel. The organizer may choose to structure the session as a set of individual presentations or as a four-speaker panel discussion. The session organizer is responsible for communications with all members in the proposed panel and, once notified that the panel is accepted, choosing a moderator for the panel.

Film Festival
Once again, the International Health section is pleased to feature a Film Festival as part of the program. The Film Festival provides a venue for film makers to showcase their work to health professionals and to highlight health issues in developing countries. If you are interested in submitting a film for consideration, please contact mbryant@msh.org for further details.

Special Groups
Special attention will be given to abstracts submitted by developing country nationals and students, therefore, these individuals should note their status on the abstract form. Two of the section's eight poster sessions (10 posters per session) are designated for developing country national presenters and student presenters.

Student Presenters
One of the section's oral panels is designated for four presentations by students (topic: Student Panel). Please submit your abstract under this topic if you wish to compete in the peer-review process for these openings. Should there be more abstracts that qualify for acceptance than space available, those abstracts will be considered for placement elsewhere in the peer-reviewed program.

• To submit as a student, one should be enrolled in a full-time degree program.
• To submit as a developing country national, one should hold a passport of a non-OECD country and not be a permanent resident of the United States or other OECD country.

Non-electronic submissions
If you know of someone who would like to submit an abstract who does not have access to the web, please help them to make the submission. As a last resort, the abstract and required author identification information may be mailed or faxed to the Malcolm Bryant, 784 Memorial Drive, Cambridge, MA, 02139, USA. Fax +1-617-250-9090
