The Women’s Caucus invites abstracts (250 words maximum) on any topic related to the lives and health of women. The Caucus is particularly interested in social, cultural, environmental, and political contexts of women’s health. Women's Caucus welcomes conceptual abstracts that discuss emerging trends in women's health, as well as data-driven abstracts. Preference is given to abstracts that focus on underserved populations of women (e.g., women in prison, women living in rural areas, women of color, women with disabilities) and emerging topics not yet covered elsewhere at the Annual Meeting (e.g., health of sex workers, genetic and reproductive technologies). The first author of the highest scoring abstract will receive a monetary award and a commemorative plaque prior to her/his presentation at the Annual Meeting. Students and new members are encouraged to submit abstracts to the Women's Caucus. The first student author of the highest scoring student abstract will also receive a monetary award and a commemorative plaque prior to her/his presentation at the Annual Meeting. In most cases, structured abstracts are preferred. All research abstracts should be submitted with five sections: background/significance, objective/purpose, methods, results, and discussion/conclusions. Do not include references or citations in the text of the abstract. All abstracts must be submitted with at least two learning objectives in the proper APHA format (i.e., “By the end of the session, the participant will be able to…”). Please check the abstract title (only capitalize the first letter and proper nouns per APHA guidelines) and text for spelling and grammatical errors. Do not include your name or contact information in the text portion as this prohibits blind peer review. Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in your abstract being rejected. If you are unable to identify a specific session for your abstract, please submit it under "Other." Lastly, all abstracts should contain sufficient details to fully evaluate the scientific value of the work rather than alluding to what “will be” included in the presentation. Abstracts that do not adhere to these requirements will not be reviewed. Please contact the program planner if you have any questions. Peer review of abstracts is blinded. Abstracts will be peer reviewed based on the following criteria: • Innovation: Innovative information/cutting edge/topic not addressed elsewhere • Overall Clarity: Clearly written and conveys essence of research • Relevance: How well the abstract relates to important women's health issues • Disparities: Concerns an underserved population • Advancement: Extent to which the work described has the potential to inform and advance the science of women's health • Completeness: How complete is the described research/project/concept, supporting data • Annual Meeting Theme: Relevance to public health, policy and politics • Quality: Quality of methodology, supporting data, study design, analysis • Overall Impression: Score the abstract in terms of your overall impression of the described research/project/concept Following are instructions for submitting a proposal for an entire session: (1) Submit each abstract separately (up to five abstracts per session) to the same topic area. If a session proposal includes abstracts submitted to multiple topic areas, the session proposal will be considered incomplete. (2) Contact the program planner (oliveri.5@osu.edu or 614-293-8174) with: (a) a brief overview of the session (including relevance to women’s health), (b) at least three proposed learning objectives in APHA format for the entire session (all individual abstracts that are part of the proposed session must have individual learning objectives), and (c) the title, first author, and abstract number of all abstracts to be included in the session. Session proposals may also include suggestions for moderators (name and contact information). Session proposals that do not adhere to these requirements will not be considered. Individuals should submit an abstract only if they are committed to presenting the paper or poster themselves or to finding a substitute willing to register, attend the meeting and present the paper or poster instead. Invitations to present will be withdrawn should authors of award abstracts be unable to present at the Annual Meeting. Please refer to the abstract submission page for abstract submission guidelines. The session topics are preliminary and do not reflect the precise content of the final program, which will be based on peer-reviewer evaluations, program theme, and diversity of topics. Only listed authors who are both APHA members and registered for the Annual Meeting may present accepted work. Only one author may present each abstract; multiple presenters for one abstract will not be accepted. Neither APHA nor the Women's Caucus can provide any financial support (including, but not limited to, registration, airfare, lodging, etc.) for author attendance at the Annual Meeting. Those interested in women's health issues are invited to join the Women's Caucus. Dues are nominal, but optional. All APHA members are invited to submit abstracts to the Women's Caucus, and you do not have to be a member of the Women's Caucus in order to submit an abstract. Please contact the program planners for more information about Women's Caucus membership. Submitting an abstract to the Women's Caucus implies that you understand the terms of this Call for Abstracts. |
