The World Health Organization describes tobacco use as the leading cause of preventable death in the world. Several attempts have been made to establish global efforts to control morbidity and mortality associated with tobacco use. The role of health policy has been described as an essential element in the management of this preventable threat.

The World Health Organization has made a call to all nations in the world to integrate health policies at the international and national level for tobacco control, in their overall efforts to increase health promotion and disease prevention services.

This presentation analyzes the role of the Alma-Atta Declaration, Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, Jakarta Declaration, Adelaide International Conference on Health Promotion and Policy, the Mexico Conference, the Bangkok conference, the WHO Framework on Tobacco Control, the Global Partnerships for Tobacco Control Initiative, and other policies initiatives in the global efforts for tobacco control.

Most health promotion and health education specialists lack appropriate training on health policy. This lack of training has generated a separation of health promotion and health policy. This policy analysis presentation explores the applications of global health policy for tobacco control in international health promotion agendas.

Learning Objectives:
* Identify the major policy initiatives and global treaties created to control tobacco use * Analyze the effects of globalization on the creation of international health policies for tobacco control * Discuss the implications of global health policies for tobacco control on international health promotion
