146156 Introduction to Workshop on Writing about Multivariate Analysis

Saturday, November 3, 2007: 9:00 AM

Jane E. Miller, PhD , Institute for Health, Health Care Policy and Aging Research, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ
The purpose of this Institute is to teach how to convey multivariate results clearly and effectively in both written and spoken form. Writing about results of linear and logistic regression is a common task for public health researchers, comprising an integral part of many academic papers, grant proposals, and presentations. Too often, however, explanations of multivariate analyses become bogged down in statistical jargon and technical details. This workshop will demonstrate how to use standard expository writing techniques in combination with principles and tools for quantitative communication to write well about applications of multivariate analysis to issues in public health.

1. The first part of the workshop will be devoted to learning how to use tables, charts, examples, and analogies to write a clear, compelling argument about a research question, using multivariate results as evidence.

2. The second part will be spent showing how to translate written results into slides and speaker's notes for an oral presentation on multivariate analysis. Both short (20-minute) conference presentations and longer (1 hour) seminar formats will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:
1. At the conclusion of this institute, participants will be able to write a clear narrative about a multivariate regression analysis of a public health issue, including background on the substantive topic, data and methods, size and statistical significance of results, and implications of findings for public health policy and research. 2. At the conclusion of this institute, participants will be able to design self-contained tables and charts to present results of regression models. 3. At the conclusion of this institute, participants will be able to create slides and speaker’s notes for a presentation about an application of multivariate analysis to a public health issue.
