Tiffany Christian, EdS, MSW, PhD , Sociology and Social Work, Appalachian State University, Boone, NC
Given continued concern about the effects of adolescent childbearing, this presentation explores the problems from the perspectives of ecological theory, role theory, and the social development model. The concept of transitional mothering is introduced to address the specific social support needs of adolescent mothers. Combining this concept with a social development perspective, the T-MOMS (Transitional Mothering of Moms Scale) was developed and pilot-tested. The T-MOMS assesses levels of transitional mothering and, along with the underlying concept of transitional mothering, offers guidance in the planning of multigenerational interventions that impact outcomes for the child, adolescent mother, and new grandmother.

Learning Objectives:
1. Analyze adolescent pregnancy from a social development perspective 2. Describe transitional mothering as a basis for multigenerational intervention 3. Assess transitional mothering 4. Develop multigenerational interventions that enhance transitional mothering
