The author is a union craftsman and resident of South Carolina, near the Graniteville derailment. This is a case study of a serious rail disaster with 9 fatalities and dozens of injuries. The author interviews many members of the community and reviews official documents to highlight (1) the serious and lasting impacts of the disaster on individual citizens and the community as a whole and (2) the planning, procedures, and training that could have reduced the number and severity of injuries.
