Topic Description The presentation will focus on why National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD) is an effective social marketing tool in addressing the HIV epidemic in the Latino community. The National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD), October 15, was started in 2003 to draw attention to the critical role HIV testing and prevention education plays in stemming the spread of AIDS. Latinos continue to be disproportionately affected by HIV, comprising over 20% of HIV/AIDS cases nationwide. Limited access to prevention and care, cultural barriers, language barriers, and immigration status has contributed to this disparity. NLAAD represents a call to action for Latinos to protect their lives and the lives of those they love by getting tested and learning about HIV. Issues to be Discussed This workshop will provide a summary of the background and implementation of NLAAD, methods for engaging partners from diverse fields, and discuss the successes of the last 3 NLAAD events. Solutions, Methods, Models or Examples This session will deliver a brief overview of NLAAD planning, resources available to participants, and efforts to increase awareness through corporate and media partnerships. The session will also present examples of successful NLAAD events. Lastly, the session will present data collected through web-based and phone evaluations of participants.
Learning Objectives: At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
•Describe why NLAAD is an effective social marketing campaign
•Describe the need for NLAAD and why it was created
•Express methods in which NLAAD is promoted
•Describe the types of events that comprise NLAAD
•Acquire knowledge about the availability of resources and materials provided by the Latino Commission on AIDS
