Responding to the PTSD Crisis Among Returning Vets
Wednesday, November 7, 2007: 8:30 AM
This is a proposal for a panel on the epidemiology and treatment of PTSD in military veterans returning from Irag and Afghanistan. The goal will be to characterize the issue and the response that DOD and the VA are currently implementing. Service gaps and potential remedies will also be identified. If this is accepted as a panel, we will invite: Dr Ira Katz (Director of MH at the VA) and Kathryn Power (Director of CMHS at SAMHSA/HHS) to serve as panelists, with Dr. Manderscheid as panel facilitator. The format will be brief statments followed by detailed questions. PTSD in returning vets is a large and growing problem that has the potential to overwhelm a very fragile State mental health infrastructure. It is clearly of great concern to the public health community and to those concerned with national mental health policy.
Learning Objectives: Learning objectives for this panel will include:
1. Knowledge of the epidemiology of PTSD among vets returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
2. Understanding of the current response by the DOD and the VA.
3. Understanding of the steps that need to be taken to address the major mental health service gaps that are now developing.
