Monday, November 5, 2007

Gail Bateson, MS , Worksafe, Oakland, CA
The Occupational Health Internship Program, OHIP, will be presenting a panel of students from its fourth summer of worker and union based projects. Students are placed for eight weeks with unions or worker centers to research and assist on occupational health issues identified by the workers. A majority of the past projects have focused on the low-wage, immigrant, and minority workforce; our student interns often come from same background, bringing language and cultural skills as well as occupational health expertise. Up to five students will present, representing projects based on both the west and east coasts.

While projects for summer 2007 have not yet been selected, potential topics include heat stress among farm workers, and hazards faced by homecare workers and day laborers.

Learning Objectives:
1. Identify unique aspects of a field-based internship program. 2. Recognize the importance of recruiting students from immigrant anjd minority backgrounds to theOSH field. 3. Identify opportunties in one's own OSH community to mentor and recruit students to OSH.
