Introduction: The objective of this work was to analyze the influence of the organizational environment on health, labor satisfaction, and absenteeism of healthcare workers in a regional hospital.

Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The study was developed in a Spanish regional hospital during the period June to December, 2006. Reference population included all active workers of medical services at the beginning of the study. Analyzed variables were organizational environment, health status, labor satisfaction, and number of days of temporary disability. Organizational environment was assessed by means of the Work Environment Scale (WES). Chi square, t-Student, one way ANOVA, and Spearman correlation tests were carried out to establish statistically significant differences among study groups. Conditions for applicability of tests was previously checked.

Results: WES total average score was 4.57 (SD=2.13). Three Spearman correlation coefficient values were obtained: between organizational climate and health problems Rho=-0.334 (p<0.001); between organizational climate and labor satisfaction Rho=0.386 (p<0.001); and between work environment and number of temporary disability days Rho=-0.318 (p=0.013).

Conclusions: High organizational climate values were statistically significant in relation to higher levels of labor satisfaction, better health status, and lower absenteeism rate.

Learning Objectives:
Analyze the role of organizational environment. Apply the Work Environment Scale (WES). Evaluate connections among organizational climate, values, labor satisfaction, health status, and absenteeism rate, in the Spanish case.
