Abstract

This session will consist of two parts. First, presenters will summarize current research in the area of disaster prevention and emergency response for people with disabilities. Presenters will then identify several recommendations that should be considered for policy change and implementation; or putting research knowledge into practice. After this, reactants will discuss possible ways to implement these or other recommendations they feel can be translated from this research. The panel reactants will be drawn from high level government officials from the Department of Education, the Department of Homeland Security and the Centers for Disease Control.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the concept of knowledge transfer from research to practice 2. Identify at least five policy recommendations based on described research summary and synthesis on disaster preparation and emergency preparedness for people with disabilities, and reasons why these recommendations were made 3. Articulate an action plan to help them create or change policy regarding disaster preparedness and emergency response for people with disabilities in their own communities.
