The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) collects data continuously throughout the year with samples large enough to produce state and substate estimates. Questions were added in 2006 to identify respondents affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, including those who were displaced, regardless of their current place of residence. This presentation will present NSDUH estimates of the prevalence of substance use, substance use disorders, major depressive episode (MDE), and serious psychological distress (SPD) in the Gulf region before and after the hurricane struck. Both current Gulf residents and those displaced will be included and differentiated in the findings. Reports will examine demographic effects (i.e. age; gender; income level) as well as service use patterns within the context of substance use disorders, depressive illness and severity of distress.

This presentation is part of the session titled Using Population and Facility Data to Understand Emerging Substance Abuse and Mental Health Phenomena: New Findings from SAMHSA's Office of Applied Studies, chaired by Anna Marsh.

Observe the prevalence of substance use, substance use disorders, major depressive episode (MDE), and serious psychological distress (SPD) in the Gulf region before and after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita 2. Identify demographic characteristics associated with disorder prevalence among exposed Gulf residents 3. Recognize service use patterns and unmet service needs among exposed Gulf residents
