Khat is a naturally occurring stimulant drug with a long history of medical and recreational use. It is an important economic commodity in producer countries, some of which are amongst the poorest in the world. Khat is widely used in some national and cultural groups, and has spread internationally with the development of air transport. Khat related health problems, and trafficking can now arise in countries with no previous understanding or experience of its use. To date there is very limited reported use of khat outside tradtitional user groups. Khat leaves are leathery, glossy, brownish green, with serrated edges, arranged in an alternate fashion on the straight branches.
