This study examined the beliefs and practices of smoking cessation promotion among Oklahoma dentists and dental hygienists. A random sample of 300 licensed dentists was obtained from the Oklahoma Dental Association. Each of these dentists was mailed a survey to assess their beliefs and practices and three copies of a survey to assess the beliefs and practices of dental hygienists in their practice. Non-respondents received another packet with the surveys. Most dentists and dental hygienists believe cessation promotion practices are part of the role of their profession. Most dentists and dental hygienists advise their patients who smoke that they should quit smoking but do not provide counseling or referrals. Major barriers include patient resistance and the amount of time. Similarities and differences between dentists and dental hygienists will be presented.
Learning Objectives: 1) Describe beliefs about cessation held by dentists and dental hygienists
2) Describe cessation practices of dentists and dental hygienists
3)List barriers for dentists and dental hygienists to practicing cessation promotion in their practice
