163123 How RWJF increased physicians' role in alcohol policy and advocacy: Lessons learned when funding to the AMA is provided and withdrawn

Donald Zeigler, PhD , Office of Alcohol, Tobacco & Other Drug Abuse Prevention, American Medical Association, Chicago, IL
The RWJF strategically sought out the AMA to manage two national program offices on underage drinking and college high risk drinking. The Foundation objective was to stimulate and provide resources for the AMA to develop national activities to create policy, media and medical community awareness of alcohol problems and solutions. Placing the national program office of a college alcohol project at the medical association might appear odd but the intended consequence was for the AMA to provide national leadership and use its credibility to address the number one public health problem among undergraduate students. The presentation outlines the lessons when funding was provided and anticipates when it is withdrawn.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) will be able to 1. Recognize the leveraging potential of outside funding to increase advocacy of a public health issue 2. Describe how the AMA advocated for alcohol control policies 3. Describe the opportunities created for health advocacy groups to work with medical professionals 4. Delineate the lessons learned when funding is provided and withdrawn
