Brad Peska, PhD, BS, MPH , KPMG LLP, Washington, DC
This presentation will provide an overview of current federal health IT policy. It will highlight the federal value-driven healthcare initiatives and related health IT activities which are consumer-focused.

The value-driven healthcare initiative aims to provide the consumer with information transparency in healthcare quality and choice. Other consumer-focused activities will also be covered, such as the VA MyHealtheVet PHR portal, the CMS Personal Health Record (PHR) feasibility initiative, and Congressional proposals to provide all federal employees with electronic health records.

This presentation will discuss how each of these federal initiatives may facilitate a possible inversion of the pyramid. The discussion will address several questions. How and to what degree will consumer-focused initiatives be integrated with other federal and state health IT initiatives? Can the proposed benefits be realized? Is the healthcare industry is ready for the inversion? Are consumers ready to take control of their health care?

Learning Objectives:
Current state of federal health IT and value driven healthcare policy and initiatives. Potential for current policy direction to “invert the pyramid.” Potential policy barriers to change.
