Stacy Baker, MSEd , Public Health Foundation, Washington, DC
Learn how to turbo charge your health improvement efforts in this workshop providing hands-on experience using root cause analysis tools. By practicing the quality improvement (QI) techniques that are used effectively in many industries, public health teams can achieve desired results faster, pinpoint underlying causes of complex problems, and avoid “dead ends” that can drain health improvement efforts of momentum and resources.

In this session, participants will learn how to get to the heart of tough problems, practice using at least two QI tools to identify root causes, and learn what to do next after using the tools.

All participants will receive a handy pocket guide to using over 20 QI tools, including Affinity Diagram, Cause & Effect (Fishbone) Diagram, Interrelationship Digraph, Process Mapping, and more.

This is an intermediate skills workshop. Participants should have basic familiarity with quality improvement concepts and be ready to learn to use tools in teams.

Learning Objectives:
1. Discuss how analyzing “root causes” can help teams solve public health problems and improve processes. 2. Apply two root cause analysis techniques [“Five Whys” and Cause & Effect (Fishbone) Diagram] to identify potential root causes of a public health problem. 3. Describe what to do next after using a Cause & Effect Diagram to solve a problem or improve a process.
