Monday, November 5, 2007: 3:30 PM

Ursula Phoenix Weir, MPH , Office of Chief of Public Health Practice, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA
Come learn about the recently updated National Public Health Performance Standards Program instruments! From late 2005 to early 2007, CDC and the NPHPSP partners were engaged in updating the three NPHPSP instruments to ensure that the standards reflect current public health practice. The update activities also identified opportunities for streamlining and other changes to improve the user-friendliness of the tools. To ensure a practice-driven process, these updates were guided by work groups comprised of state health agency leadership, local public health officials and local board of health members. This session will focus on the new NPHPSP assessments, the key changes that have been made, and how NPHPSP assessment activities can best be maximized for performance improvement.

The National Public Health Performance Standards Program (NPHPSP) is a collaborative effort to enhance to Nation's public health systems. Seven national public health organizations - CDC, APHA, ASTHO, NACCHO, NALBOH, NNPHI, and PHF – have partnered to develop national model performance standards for state and local public health systems and local governing entities, based on the framework of the ten essential public health services. Numerous state public health systems, local public health systems, and boards of health have used the national standards since the initial launch of the NPHPSP in 2002 and find it a valuable tool for assessing public health activities and identifying opportunities for improvement.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this panel session, participants will be able to: 1) Describe the key changes made in updating the NPHPSP assessments; 2) Describe how the instruments have been used in practice; and 3) Describe how knowledge gained from the NPHPSP can be translated into opportunities for improved public health practice or help to shape public health policy.
